67. Sphinx Monument

One of the blokes in the cycle group is a guy called Tony. He’s in his 50’s (or maybe 60’s) and he seems to know everything there is to know about the area around Sydney. When I said that Isla and I were getting close to exhausting the tourist trap that is Sydney he said, “I’ve spent 50 years trying to do that and I still find new stuff to do every day!”

Anyway, Tony came along on one of our first cycles and just as we were getting into the motions he stopped us all at the entrance to Ku Ring Gai Chase National Park and told us that there was a secret monument down a little path near by that we should go and see. Of course, we followed and the trail he took us on shortly lead to small but incredible moving tribute to the Australian men that died in the First World War during their travels through Egypt on their way to Gallipolli.

It was quite a sight and if it had not been for our guide (as he’s now known in the club) we wouldn’t have even known that it was there.
